Exporting from Lightwave 9.6 to Vue – A guide.

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

At the request of Mike Ballard, a guide to exporting from Lightwave 9.6 to Vue has been written. This process involves UV mapping and good methods of exporting objects plus a number of problems that may arise during the process and some solutions that I have come accross.

This is NOT a definitive guide how to UV map, but maybe some of the ideas and methods I demonstrate will help.

I will be using a model created by Mike Ballard of a rather nice glass house.

Farmhouse Reworking

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

I have reworked some parts of my farmhouse image that I was unhappy with, with the results below. I am almost happy with the results now, but I am tempted to redo some of the farmhouse itself and make it look more derelict.

Modelling in Lightwave 9.6 – Landscape Created in Vue 7 Complete

OBJ export solution…

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Rather a quick problem solution today which was nice.

A chap from the newtek forums named Kuzey suggested that I tried to cut the front of the house away (and other affected areas) and paste it back into the mesh in lightwave without re-merging the points would stop the error, which was more than likely a smoothing error.

The model was exported as OBJ and now works correctly with Vue.

Thanks very much to kuzey!

Anyone who wants the model of the house can take it free, it is also going to be up on renderosity freestuff later this evening.

It would be nice if anyone was to use it if they would post a link to their image in the comments section.

OBJ export issue with Lightwave – mesh distortion.

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I’m having some issues getting obj and lwo files exported from LW to open again, even in lightwave.

I am creating the objects in Lightwave 9.6 and exporting them as .obj files, these files open successfully in poser and in hexagon

However when I re-open the object in lightwave I get the following.

and in Vue

Ive tried to work around this by exporting it from hexagon as an OBJ but when I try and open them in vue I get the following error message.

In Lightwave the deformations are gone and the model is ok.

I have tried this on my desktop computer and my laptop with the same results both time (trying to see if it was a driver issue/bad install etc etc)

I also have tried this with a LWO file directly from lightwave, the results where different as in it loads into vue, but the uv file is completely wrecked/not read properly.   Initially I thought this was due to it being tripled when it was brought into vue, so I tripled my model in Lightwave and redid the uv maps/colour maps etc but the issue still remains, the image in the link below shows the difference between the two models.

Here is the mesh and a reduced size uv map.

Anyone have any ideas whats going wrong?

Farmhouse WIP

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

WIP shot of a farmhouse I am working on.

file_1996898

All modelled, Textured and Rendered in Lightwave 9.6 – The plan is to get it into vue and create a full on Landscape scene.

If I can get it out of lightwave successfully I will consider putting it up for sale on Renderosity (when its finished!)

Multiple Bump Paths in One texture – Lightwave 9.6 Tutorial

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Currently I am working on a scene with an old house, part of which is covered with plaster, the other is exposed brickwork, therefore two bump types are required in one texture. I had a number of ideas of how to do this in the Node Editor of Lightwave 9.6, however they where all pretty much useless. After a lot of frustration and searching the internet with no success I had a final try and got it to work.

Below is the method which I used, it probably isnt the most elegant method, but it works.

Firstly I will start with a cube.

More from the MSc project front. This is the foyer that is where the main exhibition that we are creating will be placed (in virtual land…)

Museum Animation

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

As part of the MSc course im taking our group is creating a museum space with a ubiquitous computing suprise!

I am currently creating a cgi environment to help put accross our ideas in context.

This is the first frame of a 100 frame animation, all the work here is being done in Lightwave 9.6

keen viewers may recognise some models in this museum :P
